Upgrade of Sakhalin’s rail infrastructure on schedule
In Russia’s Far East, construction work to convert all tracks of Sakhalin’s 806 km railway network from the narrow 1,067 mm gauge to Russia’s broad gauge of 1,520 mm by 2020 is underway. This year, the active phase of work, when railway workers will complete the re-laying of the track on almost 700 km of line, will start on 1 June, according to RZD.
Train services along the newly laid track on the Kholmsk - Arsentevka and Korsakov - Arsentevka - Nogliki sections are scheduled to begin by 1 September and will treble the weight of freight trains. Once the entire network is converted to broad gauge, Sakhalin railway will be direct connected to the Baikal–Amur mainline at Komsomolsk-on-Amur. (ben)
