Upgrade for rail line in South Dakota
The US department of transportation has awarded a grant of USD 22 million for the South Dakota freight capacity expansion project, which will complete upgrades to 260 km of main line on the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad (RCP&E), from Fort Pierre to Rapid City.
Among the improvements, RCP&E will replace more than 140 km of rail with 62 kg continuously welded rail, upgrade 121 bridge structures and install eleven new main line turnouts as well as 80,000 new crossties.
RCP&E was established by Genesee & Wyoming in 2014. The railway serves customers in South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wyoming and has access to the North American railfreight network via connections with class I railways BNSF, CP and UP. (ben)
