UK to receive first co-co locomotives
Stadler is introducing the Class 99 bi-mode co-co locomotive in UK: the Swiss rail car manufacturer has signed an agreement with leasing company Beacon Rail for the provision of 30 bi-mode locomotives to be operated by GB Railfreight.
The Class 99 represents the next generation of locomotive and provides a solution for all freight flows throughout the country, Beacon Rail said. With a top speed of 120 km/h, Class 99 locomotives can run on 25 kV AC electrified lines with a power of 6MW.
They also feature a high-power, low-emission stage V engine for operation on non-electrified lines. The Class 99 has a tractive effort of up to 500 kN. (ben)
