UK: more than 8,000 trucks have vital safety features
Transport for London (TfL) has issued more than 8,000 heavy goods vehicle (HGV) safety permits, as part of the direct vision standard (DVS).
Freight operators are required to obtain a free safety permit, which is needed to be compliant with TfL's innovative scheme, before enforcement begins on 26 October.
The first of its kind, the DVS tackles road danger at its source by minimising HGV blind spots. The DVS and HGV safety permit requires all trucks over 12 t gross vehicle weight to be granted a permit to enter or operate in Greater London.
The scheme was created to improve the safety of all road users. Between 2015 and 2017, HGVs were disproportionately involved in fatal collisions. (ben)
