UK: 100 t "lady" safely lifted

The specialist lifting engineering company Modulift was recently engaged by Swanage Railway to assist with a project to safely lift an old steam locomotive in the UK.

The Southern Railway U class 31806 engine needed to be lifted off its wheels in a workshop to allow the main bearings to be replaced. Built in 1926, the train is 12 m long, and 3.8 m high; its working weight with a full boiler and tender (or coal-car) is 100 t.

20 t capacity jacks were used to lift the old "lady" to the required height for access underneath. After the successful lift and requisite maintenance, the locomotive is going back into service and will cover some 16,000 km a year taking tourists on trips. (ben)
