UIRR: more and better paths for freight trains

The UIRR has welcomed the European Commission’s proposal for a new rail infrastructure capacity management regulation, but has also suggested some improvements.

The transport policy objectives include doubling railfreight’s market share by 2050. However, a performance of 800-1,000 billion tkm will require doubling the amount of freight trains as well.

These additional trains must run along the already very busy European network, which is already under pressure owing to the increase in the number of passenger trains, the UIRR said.

The union therefore proposes a minimum train length requirement on highly utilised lines, the removal of “modal” constraints and the introduction of European train path categories. (ben)
