UECC plans to run on biofuels
Words are followed by actions. After their three month biofuel trial, short sea operator UECC (United European Car Carriers) and the Good Shipping Program are cooperating with car manufacturer BMW Group to continue to test marine bio fuel-oil (BFO) on UECC’s ro-ro car carrying vessels.
The BFO is being tested on UECC’s car carrier M/V "Autosky", which has a capacity of 2,080 ceu (car equivalent unit). The vessel is currently testing BFO on the route between Zeebrugge, Belgium and Santander, Spain.
By covering the fuel premium for a biofuel volume corresponding to BMW Group’s freight that will be shipped on the "Autosky" during the trial period, BMW Group will be able to claim a CO2 emission reduction of 80 to 90% for these shipments, totalling about 400 t of carbon.
UECC is owned in equal shares by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and by Wallenius Lines. (mw)
