UAE’s railway to increase capacity by factor 8
Etihad Rail is tripling its fleet. The operator of the UAE’s national railway has awarded a contract to Chinese CRRC for the manufacture, supply and commissioning of 842 new wagons. The new rolling stock brings Etihad Rail’s total fleet to more than 1,000 units.
This expansion paves the way for rail transport to become a principal platform for freight haulage in the UAE following the completion of stage two, as it connects the entire country, the rail company said.
By tripling its wagon fleet, Etihad Rail’s annual transport capacity will increase by a factor of 8, reaching up to 59 million t per annum. The increased utilisation of rail will also reduce road congestion associated with truck traffic. (ben)
