Trucks older than five years to be banned
Saudi Arabia's public transport authority is introducing a ban on importing trucks that are more than five years old. The regulation will take effect on 5 May 2022. It will apply to all heavy transport vehicles whose total weight exceeds 3.5 t. The ban includes locomotives, trailers and semi-trailers, the state-owned Saudi press agency reported. The operational age of the vehicles shall be calculated from the beginning of January of the year of manufacture, the report added.
The move aims to raise the efficiency and competitiveness of the kingdom’s transport sector and will also contribute to reducing carbon emissions. In addition to decreasing fuel consumption, it will also help cut maintenance and operational costs, the authority said. (ben)
