Trialling double-stacked train for UK retailer

In cooperation with Nestlé UK and Ireland, the Rail Delivery Group recently delivered a new type of rail container to Grocery Tesco.

The container uses a roof raising mechanism, allowing products to be double stacked from floor to ceiling operating at full capacity before the roof is lowered for transit. This makes it easier to carry up to double the volume of products compared to other container types.

Each freight train has the potential to take up to 76 heavy goods vehicles off the roads. Delivering 1 t of products by rail produces 76% less emissions than a diesel truck journey, the Rail Delivery Group said. (ben)
