Trialling digital co-drivers

The trial with a digital co-driver involves electronic driver assistance systems that navigate on authorised routes for large and heavy goods transports and at the same time display the relevant driving instructions with pinpoint accuracy. This means that a human co-driver will no longer be required to transmit this information. It is up to the transport companies to decide whether to use a digital co-driver.

The test run, which is supported by Germany’s federal ministry for digital and transport (BMDV), is underway in several federal states and has also been running on motorway routes for several weeks. The pilot project is now being extended to a nationwide trial. (ben)
