Transport sector demands priority for railfreight

The reopening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) on a single track announced for today, Wednesday (23 August), will bring relief for freight traffic and is welcomed by the transport sector.

Transport and logistic companies demand that emergency capacities be utilised as efficiently as possible and successively expanded through speed increases and the use of additional available lines. The east tunnel, which was not damaged in the accident, should be used exclusively for freight traffic and with priority for trains with a 4 m profile.

Furthermore, the companies call for appropriate measures to make full use of the capacities on the Lötschberg line and its access routes. All existing parking and buffer spaces should be made available for operations.

Inefficiencies due to construction sites and obstacles on diversion and access routes in Switzerland and neighbouring countries must be prevented or overcome as quickly as possible, the companies added in their statement. (ben)
