Transhipment well-oiled
At 1.36 million t, cargo throughput at the Swiss Rhine ports rose by 17% in Q1/2023 compared to Q1/2022 (1.2 million t). This was due to an 83% increase in imports of mineral oil products (696,324 t).
In contrast, imports of agricultural products (-21%) and foodstuffs and animal feed (-18%) declined. The container sector could not match the strong result of Q1/2022 (-14.5%), but still reached a good 31,000 teu.
These results must be put into perspective, however, as the comparison period was characterised by strong "catch-up traffic" after the various lockdown phases in China and many containers arrived late at the Swiss Rhine ports due to handling problems in Rotterdam and Antwerp. These special factors ceased to apply in 2023. (ah)
