Trains don’t have to enter town anymore
After years of building work, the US railway operator BNSF recently celebrated the opening of the Willmar rail bypass in Minnesota (USA). It includes 4.5 km of new tracks and a triangle of railroad tracks used to turn locomotives and trains.
Now that this infrastructure has been built, at the cost of almost USD 50 million, trains no longer have to enter Willmar and stop at a terminal in town to change directions. They can bypass said terminal on the new track.
The fact that trains don’t have to be repositioned in Willmar in winter will also help to get trains where they need to be faster, as they’ll be able to ‘maintain their air’ in their air brakes. These can be slow to pump back up in cold conditions, BNSF said. (ben)
