Train covers 1 million km autonomously
Rio Tinto has successfully deployed the world’s largest robot and the first automated heavyhaul, long distance rail network.
Since completing the first loaded run in July 2018, the mining company has steadily increased the number of autonomous journeys across its iron ore operations in Western Australia, with over 1 million km now travelled autonomously.
Over the coming months Rio Tinto will continue to refine its autonomous operations. The company operates 200 locomotives on more than 1,700 km of track in the Pilbara region, transporting ore from 16 mines to four port terminals. These trains run an average of about 800 km per round trip. (ben)
