Traffic jams on Swiss roads cost billions
Switzerland’s roads accumulate almost 200,000 hours of delays every day because cars and trucks get stuck in traffic jams or make slow progress. The lost time costs money. According to the latest calculations by the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE), delay costs amounted to over CHF 3 billion in 2019.
Nine out of ten hours of these delays affect passenger cars. The remainder concerns delivery vehicles and heavy goods traffic.
Vehicles are at a standstill particularly often and for long periods on main roads. Only 17% of the delays are caused by traffic congestion on motorways.
However, the figures also show that the delay time per capita in Switzerland is below the average of the EU countries. (ben)
