Traffic declines but investments continue
The port of Liège experienced a 14.5% decrease in traffic in 2023, with over 16 million t of goods transiting through its 33 port areas. Container traffic declined by 7%, with 83,431 teu handled, while fluvial traffic dropped by 19% to 11.7 million t.
Despite these challenges, the port continued to invest in infrastructure and multimodal projects to enhance its attractiveness and economic impact on the Liège region. The Liège Trilogiport multimodal platform expanded its container terminal by 5.5 hectares and completed the construction of various logistics halls.
In 2024, the port plans to further strengthen its multimodal offerings, including the construction of a new docking facility at Hermalle-sous-Huy and the development of a bimodal platform at the Monsin port.
The port is also investing in river tourism with a new port area and harbour master's office in the Rives Ardentes district. Despite the downturn in traffic, the port remains a significant socio-economic driver for the region, supporting over 18,000 jobs. (pb)
