Trade war still makes no impact on world trade
The flash estimate for the container throughput index published by the German research body Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (RWI - Leibniz) and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose to 138.8 in January from 137.7 in December 2018.
The index is still well below the highest value noted in October 2018, but above the Q4/2018 average. The expected slowdown in the global economy has still not materialised, despite an increase in protectionist measures.
The ports of Buenaventuro (Colombia), Kingston (Jamaica), Busan, Inchon, Kwangyang (all South Korea) und Aden (Yemen) no longer feature in the index because of their failure to deliver data. The ports of Manila (Philippines) und Chennai (India) are now included.
The index is now based on data from 83 ports that account for around 60% of the container handling worldwide. The flash estimate for January is based on data from 41 ports. (kd)
