Top ten handle 25% of world record cargo volumes
Airports Council International (ACI) World has published the top ten busiest airports worldwide for 2021. Air cargo had its volumes increase by close to 15% year-over-year (+3.5% versus 2019), to an estimated record 124 million t in 2021.
Volumes at the top ten airports, representing collectively around 25% (34.2 million t) of the global volumes in 2021, gained 12.4% in 2021 year-over-year (or 15% vs. 2019 results). The gain can be attributed to the continued rise in demand for online consumer goods and pharmaceutical products.
Hong Kong (HKG, 5 million t, +12.5%) regained the top rank and Memphis (MEM, 4.5 million t, -2.9%) went back to second position, followed by Shanghai Pudong (PVG, 4 million t, +8%), Anchorage (ANC, 3.5 million t, +12.6%), Seoul Incheon (INC, 3.3 million t, +18%), Louisville (SDF, 3 million t, +4.6%), Taipei (TPE, 2.8 million t, +20%) and Los Angeles (LAX, 2.69 million t, +20.7%), while Doha (DOH), despite a 20.5% jump to 2.62 million t, was overtaken by Tokyo Narita (NRT), which totalled 2.64 million t (+31.1%).
