Throughput down in Rotterdam – despite key investments

In 2024 the port of Rotterdam experienced a 0.7% drop in cargo throughput, reaching 435.8 million t.

The decline was mainly due to lower volumes of coal and crude oil. The container segment grew by 2.8% to 13.8 million teu and dry bulk products also saw modest gains.

The port authority has also reported an 11% rise in gross investments, to EUR 320.6 million, for infrastructure projects, including the Porthos CO₂ transport and storage initiative and enhancements in digital resilience. The latter includes a national cybersecurity platform and an expanded secure chain system.

“Even amid global conflicts, we’ve shown our resilience as a port and continue to invest in our future,” said port authority CEO Boudewijn Siemons. (js)
