Three for a green light

It is a consortium with three partners: the American classification society ABS, the South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries Group (HHI) and the maritime administration of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) are joining forces to develop a project to build a tanker of last generation for the transport of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2).

The new vessel will have the capacity to transport 74,000 cbm of LCO2. ABS has already granted an approval in principle (AIP) to a CO2 injection platform developed by HHI to store carbon dioxide on the seafloor that has been captured on land, liquefied under high pressure and transported by a vessel or pipeline.

Starting in 2025, this platform could store 400,000 t of CO2 annually in a gas field in the waters of the Sea of Japan (off the eastern coast of Korea). (sh)
