Thessaloniki prepares for ULCVs

The Greek port of Thessaloniki posted a container throughput of 471,000 teu in 2021, an uptick of 2.2% compared to 2020 (461,000 teu). The number of vessels calling saw an increase of 7.1%, from 1,286 in 2020 to 1,377 in 2021. Thessaloniki isn't only a hub for the Balkans and Eastern Europe, but also a substitute if Piraeus is congested.

The hub's net profit after taxes amounted to EUR 19.8 million. Investments in 2021 came to EUR 17.4 million, compared to EUR 8.1 million in 2020. Infrastructure upgrades are also in progress. In February, the port awarded a contract for works on a sixth pier, to serve the largest ultra-large container vessels carrying up to 24,000 teu. (sh)
