The mega trip reborn
Chinese carrier Cosco Shipping has placed orders for seven new container vessels with a capacity of 23,000 teu each. The overall investment is estimated at USD 1.1 billion.
Cosco's affiliate Orient Overseas International inked the respective agreements to build the ultra large container vessels with two Chinese yards, Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering and Dalian Cosco KHI Ship Engineering. Both yards are joint ventures between Cosco Shipping and Japanese building company Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
The delivery of these newbuilds will start in the third quarter of 2023. The carrier said in a press release that this time about 60% of the shipbuilding costs will be sourced from bank financing. (cd)
