The clean dozen

Ocean Network Express (ONE) has contracted Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding to build six 13,000 teu methanol dual-fuel container ships each, set for delivery from 2027. This initiative marks ONE's entry into methanol-fuelled shipping.

Methanol is known for its potential to reduce emissions in maritime operations. The ships will feature technologies like optimised hulls, waste heat recovery, and bow windshields, with select ships having air lubrication and shaft generators, aiming to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse emissions.

CEO Jeremy Nixon highlighted this move as crucial for ONE's 2030 target to deploy ships with alternative fuels. ONE's green strategy aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. (pb)
