Thanks to Schenker, DB is back in profit

The Deutsche Bahn Group (DB) is back in the black. Despite the burdens on the rail business caused by the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the sharp rise in inflation, the company closed 2022 with a significant operating profit. The operating result (ebit adjusted) improved by around EUR 2.8 billion to just under EUR 1.3 billion compared to the corona year 2021.

Group revenue (adjusted) grew by 19.1% year-on-year to around EUR 56.3 billion in 2022 - a new record. In 2020 and 2021, DB had still made losses of billions of euros due to the pandemic.

The logistics subsidiary DB Schenker was again the main driver of this positive development. Schenker’s operating result exceeded the peak value of 2021 by almost 50% and, at around EUR 1.8 billion, it generated the highest operating profit in its corporate history, thus bringing the group back into the black.

DB Cargo increased its revenue, but is still in the red. The railway business as a whole strongly improved sales and earnings but still posted a loss of EUR 600 million. (ben)
