Testing eco-friendly sails
Smart Green Shipping has initiated on-land testing of Fast Rig, a wing sail designed to cut shipping emissions by up to 30%. Developed collaboratively and financially supported by MOL Dry Bulk, the economic development agency Scottish Enterprise, and private investors, Fast Rig harnesses wind power to provide thrust, reducing fuel consumption.
The wing sail, made of recyclable and retractable aluminium, is undergoing tests at Hunterston Parc in Scotland before on-ship trials later this year. Designed by Humphreys Yacht Design and engineered by Argo Engineering, Fast Rig is lightweight for easy installation and retracts in light winds to avoid resistance.
A feasibility study with the University of Southampton showed a potential 20% annual emissions reduction, with the latest design promising an additional 10%. Smart Green Shipping will host visitors at the test site from April to showcase Fast Rig's capabilities. (pb)
