Testing battery-electric locomotives
US class I railway BNSF and manufacturer Wabtec have reached another milestone in the exploration of the future potential of battery-electric locomotives. The companies have begun testing the FLX drive technology in revenue service between Barstow and Stockton, California, USA.
The pilot will run until the end of March. If it proves successful, BNSF will look to expand testing to other locations and operating conditions on its system.
FLX drive is the world’s first 100%, heavy-haul battery-electric locomotive. The locomotive is expected to reduce the environmental impact from emissions, while improving fuel economy by at least 10%. (ben)
