Tanks help to salvage
On 13 November 2020, engine failure forced a Volga-Dnepr Airlines AN-124 to turn back immediately after take-off from the Russian airport Novosibirsk (OVB). The aircraft overran the runway during the emergency landing. The front part of the landing gear dug deep into the earth and the aircraft’s fuselage and wings were also damaged.
On 26 November 2020, the Russian airline decided to ground all its eight operative AN-124s for an indefinite period for safety reasons.
Heavy equipment was used to salvage the aircraft (empty weight 180 t): two Brem-1 armoured recovery tanks pulled the aircraft out of its difficult position. The damages are now to be repaired on firm ground.
