Tanger Med in 2022
The Tanger Med port ecosystem, located on the Mediterranean, handled an overall tonnage of almost 108 million t in 2022, up 6% compared to 2021. This throughput represents approximately 54% of all port tonnage carried out in Morocco. The almost 7.6 million teu moved in 2022 were also 6% above the volume of the previous year.
In addition, the port exceeded the hitherto record bar of 700,000 teu containers handled per month. Ro-ro traffic grew as well, with the port complex processing almost 460,000 TIR trucks in 2022, an upswing of 13% compared to 2021.
This good momentum for national exports was driven mainly by the industrial and agri-food sectors with respective growth rates of 22% and 11%.
With regards to new vehicles, 479,000 units transited through the two vehicle terminals in Tanger Med, a growth of 11% compared to 2021.
Liquid bulk traffic increased by 6% while solid bulk traffic recorded a total of 404,000 t handled, up 18% compared to last year, mainly thanks to the traffic of plate coils and cereals. A total of 14,404 ships docked at the Tanger Med port complex in 2022, up 32% compared to 2021, including 961 ULCV. (sh)
