Switzerland: fewer trucks crossing the Alps
The volume of goods that were transported across the Swiss Alps rose to 39.6 million t in 2018, 2% more than in 2017. The upsurge is primarily due to more railfreight.
A record 19 million t of goods stowed in containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers were hauled by rail as unaccompanied intermodal traffic along the alpine corridor. Despite this, railfreight volumes as a whole did not match up to the record level set in 2016, even though the railway’s market share rose to 70.5%.
Trans-alpine roadfreight traffic decreased to 941,000 trips in 2018, but this is still above the legal target of 650,000 road trips, according to the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT). (ben)
