Switzerland: additional funds for car transport
In Switzerland, the Federal Council has decided to increase its financial support for car loading facilities by a further CHF 40 million in addition to the CHF 60 million already allocated in 2018. It is also proposing to the Swiss parliament to slightly modify the financing procedures.
The railways should finance their rolling stock through bank loans in future. The Confederation may pay compensation in the event of a loss-making operation.
In the next few years, major investments in renovation are due for the Swiss car loading facilities at the Lötschberg, Furka and Vereina tunnels. These connections are important for the accessibility of the regions. They also help to avoid longer detours and journeys over Alpine passes. (ben)
