Switzerland: 95% of the cargo will stay on the rails
With customers and cantonal authorities, SBB Cargo has verified more than half of the 344 service points for Swiss-wide wagonload traffic, which currently shows a deficit. In this survey, the company explored and defined possible alternatives to a fixed daily operation.
Effective immediately, the wagonload network for general cargo will contain 154 service points, for which SBB Cargo will shoulder the capacity utilisation risk. At 131 service points, the railways will offer its customers specially tailored solutions.
As from the 2019/2020 timetable change, 59 service points will be taken out of operation on profitability grounds. However, despite these changes, more than 95% of the cargo will remain on the rails, says SBB Cargo (ben)
