Swiss train drivers operate locos from afar
In partnership with Alstom, the Swiss railway company SBB was one of the first railway companies in Europe to trial remote-controlled locomotives in a marshalling yard during ongoing operations. To this end, 24 train drivers operated a locomotive located in Zurich-Mülligen from a remote-control panel in Zurich-Oerlikon as "remote operators”.
The test runs were used to check whether train drivers could move a defective train to a safe area by remote control in an automated operation. In future, this method could be used for tunnel maintenance work or construction sites, for example, SBB said. (ben)
