Swiss rail sector retains diversity
The Swiss federal council has decided to maintain the existing organisation of the railway infrastructure, which will thus be operated by several companies as hitherto. The concessions for the two largest infrastructure operators SBB and BLS will be renewed.
Wherever it seems appropriate in the interest of public transport, the federation will promote mergers and the cooperation between companies, the Federal Office of Transport writes.
The current organisation of the Swiss rail transport sector dates back to the year 2007. In addition to SBB and BLS, SOB and 34 other infrastructure operators entitled to public funding use the Swiss railway network, most of which are narrow-gauge railways. (ben)
