Sustainability milestone for HGK Shipping

HGK Shipping recently launched its newest dry cargo vessel, "Helios," in Düsseldorf (Germany). Serving ADM, a global food and agriculture company, the ship features the world's largest solar panel array on an inland vessel.

The "Helios" includes low-water optimisation, diesel-electric propulsion, and "future-fuel-ready" capabilities. The solar panels generate up to 90 megawatt-hours annually, reducing emissions and saving up to 70 t of CO2 per year.

The vessel primarily transports rapeseed to ADM sites in Germany, supporting more sustainable supply chains. This project demonstrates their commitment to resource-efficient raw material delivery and reduced environmental impact, the two companies said. (pb)
