Support for Italy’s railfreight sector
The European Commission has approved EUR 374 million of financial support to compensate Italian railfreight companies for the damage suffered due to the coronavirus pandemic. The funds will be available for companies operating along the rail transport and logistics chain.
As from the beginning of the pandemic, Italy and other countries introduced an array of measures to limit the spread of the virus.
The restrictions had a direct negative impact particularly on the demand for railfreight services, owing to the limited production and trade of goods transported by rail. As a result, railfreight companies experienced a significant drop in transport volumes and revenues. (ben)
