Sudden ebb in used container ship market
What was good in the past can be bad today. The once vibrating market of second-hand container vessels slowed down in the course of 2022. Over the year, sales and purchase levels were only half as high as in 2021, according to Alphaliner's latest global survey.
In 2022, units with 950,300 teu capacity changed hands, meaning container ships sales declined by 49% compared year-on-year. Capacity loss went even further, going down by 53% compared to more than 2 million teu in 2021.
Globally, 295 container vessels were traded in 2022. For once, CMA CGM took the lead by acquiring 102,500 teu in 31 ship purchases. MSC followed second, acquiring the 8,800 teu “Northern Jasper”, amongst others. The tide definitely turned over last year. (sh)
