Strong year too on US east coast
2018 was a year of peaks at the Port of New York and New Jersey (PNYNJ). Some 7.2 million teu were lifted and the throughput exceeded 2017’s tonnage by almost 7%. Import volumes were strong too, surging by 8.2%.
According to its records, the port handled one-third of all containers on the US east coast in 2018, a 2.8% increase in market share year-on-year.
The Bayonne Bridge navigational clearance project was completed in June 2017. The scheme that raised the clearance under the bridge from 46 m to 65.5 m, also contributed to PNYNJ’s volume increase. Nearly 30% of the port’s containerised cargo is now carried on vessels with capacities exceeding 9,000 teu.
On the landside, the port’s rail system moved 646,000 containers, a 13.8% increase vis-a-vis 2017. (kd)
