Strong women, strong rail sector
In Germany’s railway industry, the proportion of female employees is around 18, as reported by a recent survey among the membership of the German Railway Industry Association (VDB). "If we significantly increase the proportion of women, we can also decisively reduce the shortage of skilled workers," says VDB chief executive Sarah Stark.
In its current campaign "Strong women, strong rail sector", the VDB now presents more than 100 women who work in the sector. In their interviews, the participants suggest ways to make the railway industry more attractive for female employees.
For example, more flexible working hours could give women more time for child care and family life. The participants also suggest support and mentoring programmes, internships and scholarships specifically designed to help women achieve their professional goals in the industry. (cj)
