Strike in Belgium will impact freight business

A 24-hour national strike is taking place in Belgium from 06.00 today (13 February 2019). The whole country will be impacted by a nationwide shutdown of public services including schools, public transport and ports.

Operations in the port of Zeebrugge will suffer substantially, as dock labourers are participating in the industrial action. The port expects the roads leading up to the offices and terminals as well as the actual terminals will be completely blocked.

Trucks, trains and barges will not gain admittance to the country's ports. The port of Antwerp expects the shutdown to cost millions of euros and have a serious impact on supply chains. (kd)
