Stricter CO2 targets for road haulage
The EU’s environment ministers have reached an agreement (‘general approach’) on a proposal that aims to further reduce CO2 emissions in the road transport sector by raising the emissions reduction targets for 2030 and introducing new targets for 2035 and 2040.
Until 2040, the emissions of heavy commercial vehicles shall decrease by 90%. The compromise provides for a gradual reduction in CO2 emissions. By 2030, buses and trucks should emit 45 % less carbon dioxide.
In addition, more vehicle categories will be included in the targets, notably buses and trailers. The ministers will now clarify the roadmap for new investments to ensure the competitiveness industry remains competitive. (ben)
