Stena to deploy new ferry on Irish Sea

A new ro-pax ferry named the “Stena Estrid” has just been launched. According to the ferry operator’s plans, the newbuilding will go into service on the Dublin – Holyhead route at the beginning of 2020.

The “Stena Estrid” is the first of three new e-flexer ferries for the Irish Sea. All the units will be 215 m long and offer 3,100 lane metres for freight and space for 1,000 passengers. The e-flexer units will be bigger than the current ro-pax standard.

The newbuild programme underscores the importance of the Irish Sea for Stena Line. The shipping company is convinced that the traffic will continue to grow in that strategically important region.

Stena Line’s Scandinavian roots are reflected in the name Estrid – the Old Norse spelling of Astrid. Estrid, which can be found on many old rune stones in Scandinavia, means “the divine beauty”. (kd)
