Southern European forwarders expanding

Building in Casa
The Alonso Group, founded in 1962, is a big player in the logistics sector, as well as being active in the energy, infrastructure and leisure segments. Now it has set up a logistics subsidiary in Morocco.
The Alonso Group, headquartered in Valencia (Spain), is further expanding its international structure, as is witnessed by the establishment of Alonso Forwarding Morocco, announced late in May.
The office in the economic hub of Casablanca has already opened for business, strengthening the company’s coverage in the Maghreb. The Spaniards just recently began their activities in the region with new branches in Algeria (Alonso Forwarding Asamar) and Tunisia (Alonso Forwarding Tunis).
Beyond the Strait of Gibraltar and into the world
Alonso Forwarding Morocco offers a wide range of logistics services for any type of cargo, including 3PL solutions and FCL and LCL options, especially in the field of maritime transport.
The new branch, made up of professionals with extensive SCM experience and in-depth knowledge of the functioning of the markets in the Maghreb, will promote the exchange of goods via land transport between Morocco, the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe for LCL and FCL options, amongst other things.
Word from Casablanca has it that the company will offer regular connections between all of Europe and Morocco, support the logistics department and become a reference in Spain for truck traffic to and from the North African country. To this end preparations are underway to establish a second Moroccan office in Tangier.
Global links to support near-shoring for Europe
In recent years Morocco has intensified its investments in its maritime infrastructure and railway network. The country (36 million inhabitants) also stands for near-shoring for Europe. Alonso Forwarding Morocco will link up with the group’s other firms further south in Africa, as well as in Asia and North and Latin America.
Italians drawn by promising prospects in India
The South Tyrolean logistician Fercam, which in 2023 once again managed to achieve a total turnover of more than 1 billion EUR – 1.06 billion, to be precise, despite a weak global economy – recently made its debut in India. Fercam India, whose first office in the Indian capital New Delhi became operational on 1 June, will be led by director Vishal Singh, who will report to Jury Michelozzi, Fercam’s head of air and ocean activities.
In contrast to slow-growing or even stagnant European economies, the Indian Subcontinent has been experiencing significant growth in terms of GDP and industrial production for many years now. IMF estimates have it that by 2027, India will be the world’s third-largest economy, with a GDP of more than USD 5 trillion.
Fercam wants to benefit from this and is already planning to expand its presence to Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai in the short to medium term. “Our goal is to develop where the economy is growing and there is concomitant high demand for logistics and forwarding services,” as Fercam CEO Hannes Baumgartner summarised.
