South Carolina intermodal expansion
South Carolina Ports has reported that it has completed a USD 55 million expansion of the inland port of Greer.
The facility now has capacity for 300,000 rail lifts annually and aims to meet projected demand through 2040. Upgrades include a larger container yard, 9000 feet of extended rail track to accommodate longer trains and new terminal operations and maintenance facilities.
Located along the I-85 corridor, the inland port of Greer connects the port of Charleston with inland markets via daily Norfolk Southern rail services. The port has seen a 355% increase in cargo volume over the past decade.
The expansion was partially funded by a USD 25 million 'Build' grant from the US department of transportation. The company applied for this grant in partnership with the South Carolina department of transportation, Norfolk Southern and BMW. (js)
