Some relief on north-south axis
Following the derailment of a goods train a year ago, the Swiss Gotthard Tunnel has been fully operational for rail traffic since yesterday, Monday, 2 September. The Rhine Valley railway in Germany has now also been reopened after three weeks of construction work.
On the road, the reopening of the A13 motorway in Switzerland is relieving congestion on the north-south axis. The motorway had been partially closed since 21 June 2024 due to storm damage.
But there is new trouble ahead: since yesterday, the 11 km Mont Blanc motorway tunnel between France and northern Italy has been closed for 15 weeks for renovation work. (ben)
