Smart containers, safer food

MSC is making use of smart containers to transport food for its cruises. This will ensure freshness and safety of food products.

Every year, MSC Cruises receives 5,500 different types of food and beverages, most of which are locally sourced. A large number of these products are temperature-sensitive, eg. meat, fish, sea food and milk products. After implementing smart container technology at its depot in Genoa last year, MSC Cruises is now expanding the operation across its 22 ships.

Equipped with internet-enabled measuring devices, the containers can be controlled in terms of position, temperature and humidity, A central team in Antwerp will be surveying the container data around the clock.

This innovation will enable MSC to enhance the quality and safety of its food offerings. It will also give the company flexibility in cases where local food sourcing is not possible. (mk)
