Slight upswing for Marseille Fos in 2018
The port of Marseille Fos made modest progress in 2018. The total cargo throughput grew to 81 million t, 1% more than in 2017. Last year, container traffic rose by 2% to 1.4 million teu, and dry bulk volumes surged by 12% to 15.2 million t.
With conventional traffic – mainly steel breakbulk – dropping by 11% to 2.4 million t, the general cargo throughput of 20.2 million t was driven by container volumes, which accounted for 13 million t. That was supported by the ro-ro throughput including 203,000 trailers (+1%) and 214,700 import/export cars (+2%).
The French port spent some EUR 60 million on infrastructure development, maintenance and expansion work at the logistics park. In the EUR 85 million capital expenditure budget for 2019, EUR 58 million has been earmarked for development projects. These include ongoing work to link the two Fos container terminals via a quay extension, which is due for handover in April 2020. (kd)
