Shore power initiative launched in India

Gateway Terminals India (GTI), also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to pilot shore power supply (SPS) technology.

The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions from vessels during port stays by supplying power directly from the national grid, with plans to switch to green energy. The SPS will initially accommodate two ships simultaneously, cutting down on diesel use and noise pollution.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, India's union minister of ports, shipping, and waterways. It aligns with APM Terminals' global decarbonisation goals to improve air quality around ports and contribute to sustainability efforts. (pb)
