Shifts in market shares among carrier alliances
Sea-Intelligence has analysed the shifts in capacity market shares among the three main carrier alliances on key trade lanes. The alliances saw a collective loss in market share on the Asia-North America West Coast route, particularly during the pandemic due to significant non-alliance capacity deployment.
In 2023, Ocean Alliance recovered its position, whereas 2M remained below its pre-pandemic level. On the Asia-North America East Coast route, 2M's market share dropped considerably from its pre-pandemic heights, with both Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance also experiencing declines.
In the Mediterranean market, The Alliance slightly increased its share during the pandemic, now closely trailing 2M alongside Ocean Alliance. The most notable change occurred in the Asia-North Europe trade, where THE Alliance has kept a steady market presence.
Meanwhile, 2M has steadily lost ground to Ocean Alliance, indicating a shift in dominance towards CMA CGM, COSCO, and Evergreen at the expense of Maersk and MSC, and this trend appears to be unrelated to the initial disbanding of 2M. (pb)
