Shanghai is starting to feel it now

In April, the port of Shanghai’s throughput went down by approximately 25% and the port’s average daily container handling capacity has now fallen to around 100,000 teu.

While the port remained operational despite the shutdown, hinterland connections were seriously hampered. Insufficient trucking capacity was one of the reasons. In order to balance the shortages, the port of Shanghai banked on water-to-water handling with barging and feedering from nearby ports, land-to-sea and sea-rail combined transportation.

Accordingly, water-to-water transhipment volume of Shanghai was around 1.99 million teu in April, 65% of the total throughput passing through Shanghai port in that month. So far, some factories are still shut down, warehouses are closed and logistics options in the hinterland scarce. (sh)
